International Polar Bear Day

Polar Bear Facts
- Mating season is normally between August and October, where the female constructs and enters her den for the winter. Dens are normally found in sea ice or underneath the snow.1
- Mother polar bears typically give birth to 2 cubs per litter. The cubs are tiny, have woolly hair and pink skin. Their eyes remain closed for a month.1
- The mother polar bear emerges from the den between late February and early April. Her cubs are well-developed by then and capable of walking with her.1
- The family will stay near the den for about 2 weeks, cubs will play, mom will rest. They will eventually head to the sea ice.1
- Polar bears can live up to 30 years.1
- Polar bears don’t eat penguins. Mainly because polar bears live at the North Pole and penguins are from the South Pole.2
- Polar Bears would probably drink Coca-Cola, not Diet Coke, because they need to consume 12,000 calories or 50-90kgs a day.2
Now you know some facts about polar bears, learn more about our Arctic Pigments.
Arctic Infrared Reflective Pigments
Arctic Infrared Reflective Pigments are highly-engineered pigments that enhance the value of the materials they are in by mitigating solar-induced heat build-up. These pigments deliver the best lifetime value because their performance can delay or eliminate costly damage caused by sunlight. Less warping, twisting, fading and failure means a potential maintenance savings for building product applications. Products that use Arctic Pigments stay cooler, are more comfortable to the touch and lead to more sustainable environments.
While pigments are usually appreciated for their color properties, they also interact with the invisible UV (ultraviolet) and IR (infrared) wavelengths. Shepherd Color has decades of experience modifying and optimizing the IR properties for a range of applications. The key application is the use in building products to keep materials cooler, reduce the energy that enters into buildings, and potentially reduce energy usage. The latest use for IR pigments is improving the recyclability of dark color plastics by allowing IR sensors to identify polymers.
